The Protein Power diet was developed in the 1990s by Michael and Mary Eades. It is based on the concept of diet success through high protein and low carbohydrate intake, much like the Atkins Diet and so many other diets popular today. High protein foods are encouraged throughout the diet.

DIET GUIDELINES

The diet is broken down into three stages:

Stage 1 - Intervention: This stage is based on very low consumption of carbohydrates. This stage continues until you close in on your ideal weight.

Stage 2 - Transition: In this stage, carbohydrates are slowly consumed more and more as you near your ideal weight.

Stage 3 - Maintenance: This is the stage where you are to determine the exact amount of carbohydrates to consume to maintain your ideal body weight.

The Protein Power diet recommends exercises such as lifting weights to maintain muscle mass, as well as short periods of intense cardio activity.

ADVANTAGES OF THE DIET

If you follow this diet, you are certain to lose weight quickly. As well, it is a step ahead of other diets such as the Sugar Busters Diet and the Hollywood Diet in the sense that it does have some scientific evidence which points in its favour.

DISADVANTAGES OF THE DIET

This diet limits carbs, and any diet that limits carbs limits overall calories as a result and is certain to result in weight gain. Also, weight lost in this way is normally largely water and will come back quickly once off the diet. Also, like so many other diets, by cutting calories, it cuts back healthy foods and is not a good diet to follow over extended periods of time.

This diet is semi-restrictive, and as a result, you may find yourself going hungry throughout the diet. This type of diet, like the Atkins Diet is easy to follow and will produce good results in the short term. However, if you have long term goals, you may want to consider looking further. If your goals are only temporary weight loss, then certainly this diet is worth giving a try.
